Nephrology specialty

Nephrology concerns itself with the diagnosis and treatment of hereditary or acquired kidney diseases (eg. polycystic kidney disease, glomerulonephritis) including electrolyte disturbances and hypertension.

Nephrology focuses on the care of patients with chronic renal failure requiring renal replacement therapy (hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis) and renal transplant patients.

Many diseases affecting the kidney are systemic disorders not limited to the organ itself, and may require special treatment. Examples include diabetes mellitus, systemic vasculitides and autoimmune diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus.
